Understanding the Different Types of Acne

By Casey Gentles

Acne is a terrible and devastating skin disease that affects more than 75% of all individuals. It mainly affects teenagers but persons in there forties can also experience acne. Acne is occurs when there is an excess amount of sebum being produced by the sebaceous glands. The excess sebum clogs the pores and traps dirt and bacteria. When the body’s defense system tries to combat this the result is an acne pimple.

There are two primary types of acne: non-inflammatory and inflammatory.

What is Non Inflammatory Acne?

Non Inflammatory acne is the mild case of acne. This is typical of the whiteheads and blackheads that show up on our faces neck chest and back. Whiteheads occurs when the trapped sebum and bacteria stays below the surface of the skin. They may show up as tiny white spots and sometimes they are so small that we may not see them with our naked eye. On the other hand the blackheads occur when the pores open to the surface, and the sebum which contains the pigment melanin oxidizes and turn a brown/black color.

What is Inflammatory Acne?

Inflammatory acne is a more severe case of acne and requires immediate attention as it can also lead to permanent scars. Inflammatory acne consists of Pustules, papule, nodule, cyst and millia.

A pustule is a small collection of pus in the top layer of skin (epidermis) or beneath it in the dermis.

A is a small and solid elevation of the skin which does not contains puss and often occur in clusters and can accompany rashes.

Nodule- When a follicle breaks along the bottom, total collapse can occur, causing a large, inflamed bump that can be sore to touch.

Cyst - sometimes severe inflammatory reaction can result in very large puss filled lesions.

Milia, also known as milk spots or oil seeds, are benign, keratin-filled cysts that can appear just under the epidermis or on the roof of the mouth. They are commonly associated with newborn babies but can appear on people of all ages. They are usually found around the nose and eyes, and sometimes on the genitalia.
